Always check if you need a visa or not
According to the country you are going to and the country you are coming from , you will probably need a visa. For example, a country like Australia will ask you for an electronic visa when you are coming on holidays. USA will require an electronic passport. It is important that you make sure you have all your paperwork ready before you actually leave your country.

- Give someone you know your itinerary: while you are away people might need to contact you for many reasons. It's a good idea to leave your itinerary to a person you know (family, friends). It will also help in case an accident happen to you while on holidays. Leave phone numbers and addresses of your stopovers. It's a safety precaution which can be really useful in certain cases.
- Keep an emergency card with you : It is also a good idea to keep a card on you with your home address and an emergency contact person in case
- Travel by pair: if you are hiking or doing any activity at risk, make sure you take a buddy with you. It's always the safest way to be sure you won't get alone in the middle of the desert.
- Check the weather conditions: you can't know every hazards of a specific place but you can at least understand the weather. For example: if you travel to the French Alps, make sure that you are aware of the temperature during winter as it can go really below the zero Celsius degrees.
- Dictionary: Always bring a pocket dictionary with you, this will save you from many issue and misunderstandings.
- Wear appropriate clothing: you will have to understand that from one country to another you will need to wear the right clothes. For example, don't go hiking without a good pair of hiking boots, don't go in Western Australia without a hat, and never go skiing in France without sunglasses...
- Have a map handy: Always bring a map with you (or a GPS). This will keep you out of trouble and might also avoid interpersonal conflicts with the person you are traveling with.
- Backup your travel document: Save your travel documents on a USB key in case you lose the printed version. You will often need to show a proof of reservation. It's a good idea to keep a copy of your ID too, in case you lose the original one.
- Keep your money safe: never keep all your money in the same spot. It's a good idea to dispatch your money in case you lose a bag (or it's been stolen)
- Bring basic medications with you: you never know what kind of drugs you can find in the country you are going to. Make sure you take whatever you need. Note: make sure that you take the prescriptions with you (Customs will ask you for them when you enter the country)
